Tackle this: Fishing Birthday Card! by Bobbi Lemanski

Tackle this: Fishing Birthday Card! by Bobbi Lemanski

For the fishing enthusiast, this handmade masculine card is the perfect catch! Featuring a collection of colorful fishing tackle, lures, and gear, this design celebrates the peaceful pastime of casting a line and enjoying the great outdoors. I live on a lake and every morning when I put the shades up in our bedroom, I am greeted by fishermen on Lake Wisconsin. Sometimes there is a blue heron, ducks on the pier, geese close by and occasionally a fox walking through! My card features the following Honey Bee Stamps products:

Netting A2 Cover Plate

Display Box Tackle Add-On Honey Cuts dies

Lovely Layers: Lures Honey Cuts dies

Hooked On You stamps and coordinating Honey Cuts dies

For the basics... my Honey Bee Stamps featured project below is made from Neenah 80lb Solar White cardstock for the card base and card front panel. All of the black ink stamping was done using Honey Bee’s Bee Creative Intense Black Ink. I use Honey Bee Stamps Bee Creative Precision Glue and for when I want more dimension, Bee Creative Foam Dots With Tab or these squares ones (used today) for adhering my elements together. My blender brushes (large and small) are a must for ink blending color on the background, too. For white highlights, I use my white acrylic pen. My card is 5" X 7" in size.

To make this card, I cut a front panel measuring 5" X 7" from white cardstock. I die cut the netting background from kraft cardstock using the Netting A2 Cover Plate. I blended on Walnut Stain Distress Oxide Ink around the edges of the net. I attached the net to the front panel using glue.

I stamped a sentiment from the Hooked On You stamp set and used the coordinating Honey Cuts dies to cut two layers of cardstock to glue them together. I attached the sentiment using foam tabs. Tip: When I elevate a sentiment strip with foam tabs, I like to add two layers to it so that is does not bend or tear. This added reinforcement keeps it look beautiful!  I added the sentiment to the front panel, first, to make sure I had room for it.

Using the Display Box Tackle Add-On Honey Cuts dies, I made a number of fishing gear items using bright colors of cardstock. I die cut the pieces and assembled the layers, gluing them together using Honey Bee Stamps Bee Creative Precision Glue (my very favorite glue for crafting!) I added extra design details to each one using colored markers and my white ink pen like this one. They are so cute. Want to know my inspiration for these?

These cute fishing designs on the white background dress inspired me to make this card. I love the fresh colors on white! You never know where your next card inspiration will come from. Mine was shopping online for a summer dress!

I added the rest of the fishing gear to the netting. I used foam tabs behind some of them and some I glued right to the netting. This creates dimension on the front of the card which makes it more interesting and attractive. I splattered some brown-black watercolor paint over the front to make it look just a bit shabby, too! When I do this, I usually cover the sentiment strip to avoid dark splatters over dark letters. Sometimes when this happens, the letters and words become difficult to see and read. Tip: I use Post-It notes to cover the strip and reuse them over and over until they are no longer sticky and useful.

I still needed a focal point on the front. When everything is the same size, the card becomes boring so I added two larger lures from the Lovely Layers: Lures Honey Cuts dies. I assembled two bigger fish and attached them using a black hook towards the top left corner. I used foam tabs behind them and just placed them over other elements. I like the random placement that is not so perfect for this card.

Inside the card, I stamped three sentiments from the Hooked On You stamp set and used some additional die cuts from the front to add some color inside the card. I used a ruler to draw fishing string that extends to the top of the card. A few hand-drawn dots and squiggle lines in black around the lures completes the inside.

Whether your favorite angler enjoys early mornings on the lake or weekends spent reeling in the big one, this card is sure to hook their attention and make their day a little brighter. Check out my reel for this card here on Instagram! Make sure to follow me for more!
