If birthdays were sandwiches, this one would definitely be piled high with all the good stuff! Today’s handmade horizontal, gatefold birthday card features a mouthwatering sub stacked with layers of meats and cheese, juicy tomatoes, creamy avocados, crisp cucumbers, fresh lettuce, and plenty more tucked inside. With all those colorful toppings and delicious details, this overstuffed sandwich makes a fun and unexpected centerpiece for a birthday card. It’s the perfect way to say, “Hope your birthday is stacked with everything you love!” My card features the following Honey Bee Stamps products:

For the basics... my Honey Bee Stamps featured project below is made from Neenah 80lb Solar White cardstock for the card base and card front panel. All of the black ink stamping was done using Honey Bee’s Bee Creative Intense Black Ink. I use Honey Bee Stamps Bee Creative Precision Glue and for when I want more dimension, Bee Creative Foam Honeycomb Foam for adhering my elements together. My blender brushes (large and small) are a must for ink blending color on the background, too. For white highlights, I use my white acrylic pen. My card is 5" X 7" in size.
The Lovely Layers: Sub Sandwich Honey Cuts Dies has so many fun layers of goodness to add that I wanted to be able to show them off inside. To do this, I chose a horizontal, gatefold card design that opens in the middle of the sub sandwich. It's a way to take the top of the roll off and see all the fun details inside the bun. I started with a 7" wide by 10" long piece of Neenah 80lb Solar White cardstock. I scored 2-1/2" inside from the top and bottom to make the gatefold design. I used my Scor-Buddy tool to make these score and fold lines. I also took a pattern paper from the Summer Picnic Paper Pad and cut it down to 7" wide X 5" tall and cut it in half at 3-1/2" to make two pieces measuring 7" wide X 3-1/2" tall. I attached the pieces to the front of the card base on the gatefold flaps, one above the other. I cut another piece of red/white gingham pattern paper from the Summer Picnic Paper Pad at 3-1/2" square. I cut that in half on the diagonal and attached it to the center of the card front, ensuring the point of the paper was at 3-1/2" in from both sides on the gatefold flap.
Next, I focused on making the sub sandwich. Using the Lovely Layers: Sub Sandwich Honey Cuts Dies. I cut all the elements that I wanted to use inside the bun and bun itself. Using my blender brushes (large and small) and my Copic Markers, I created all the elements I stacked the elements using the Sub Guide to help with the layering. You can make different looking subs by the way you stack and use the ingredients.
For the bun, I used a natural ivory cardstock with specks in it and Distress Oxide Ink in Tea Dye to get the golden brown look on the top of the sub roll. When assembling the sandwich, I created the bottom and then created the top. The top contains the top roll, cheese slices and avocados. The bottom layer includes all the other ingredients. Because the card opens between the sub, it's important to NOT attach these layers together.
I attached the top and bottom of the sub sandwich to the card gatefold flaps. I also attached two sentiments stamped in Bee Creative Intense Black Ink and die cut using the Packed With Joy stamp set and coordinating Honey Cuts dies. I attached one to the top and one under the sub on the front. I added a Velcro dot enclosure under the middle cascading leaf and on the red onion circle below it to keep the card closed.
Inside the card, I attached two sentiments and all the extra ingredients in the inside of the card. I added a few black dots around the food items to complete the inside.
